The Staunton Convention & Visitor Bureau has received two statewide tourism awards. Staunton won the “Best in Show – Peer Judged” category. VACVB’s panel of judges also selected Staunton as the winner in the category of “Advertising/promotions for DMOs with budgets under $1 million: online and e-marketing.”

Attorney General Mark R. Herring has launched a two week public safety tour of Virginia in which he will hold 22 regional meetings to hear from local public safety and law enforcement leaders and local elected officials about challenges in their area and ways that he can help protect our communities.

Every year as the General Assembly session winds down, it’s important to take some time to reflect on the things that have been accomplished, the things yet to accomplish, and perhaps the missed opportunities. With less than a week left before the scheduled adjournment of the 2014 session, a couple of things are clear.

The Northern Virginia congressional delegation announced a significant step forward in securing a commitment for a low-interest, long-term federal loan to help finish constructing the Dulles Metrorail Project.

From 4 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 12) through 4 p.m. Thursday (Feb.13), Virginia State Police state police emergency dispatch centers fielded 4,052 calls for service. During that same 12-hour period, state troopers responded to 1,095 traffic crashes and 1,115 disabled vehicles across the Commonwealth.

White Hall is hosting its 4th Annual Wine & Chocolate Celebration, which will feature Virginia-based Gearharts Fine Chocolates. Participants will get to sample three different chocolates paired with six wines and listen to local musicians Curtis Prince and Travis Elliott.

Gov. Bob McDonnell applauded the efforts of the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and its members, Paxton Van Lines, and Maersk to provide over 18,000 blankets to Syrian refugees in Turkey. This initiative began following a recent NVRC cultural exchange trip to the region where local and state government officials from the Commonwealth toured a refugee camp near Adana, Turkey.

The Virginia Board of Education today unanimously approved an A-F grading system that will assign letter grades to schools based on the percentages of students demonstrating proficiency, academic growth and college and career readiness. Initial letter grades will be announced at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.
