The seventh-ranked Virginia baseball team swept a doubleheader against fifth-ranked Florida State Saturday at Davenport Field, running away with a 9-2 victory in game one before one-hitting the Seminoles, 2-0, in the nightcap. Virginia (34-6, 15-5 ACC) swept a doubleheader for the first time in program history against Florida State (31-8, 13-7) while clinching its sixth ACC series win in seven tries this year.

The Harrisonburg Startup Weekend is scheduled to open this Friday evening at Showker Hall on the JMU campus. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and two of its members (or partner agencies) are competing for a total of $85,000 in grant funding through Walmart’s nationwide Fighting Hunger Together campaign. The two Food Bank members competing for the grant include Hope Distributed, a food pantry in Harrisonburg, and Campus Kitchens, a food distribution program in Lexington. All of the grant funding will support their child hunger-relief programs.

The fifth-ranked UVa. baseball team blew open a close game with Miami with a nine-run eighth inning in a 15-4 victory over the Hurricanes Friday night at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (24-2, 8-2 ACC) recorded their eighth straight win and their fifth consecutive ACC victory.

Researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have determined the molecular structure of a protein whose mutations have been linked to several early aging diseases, and side effects for common HIV and AIDS medications. This breakthrough could eventually help researchers develop new treatments for these early aging diseases and redesign AIDS medications to avoid side effects such as diabetes.
