Ernie Clement (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) hit a two-run, walk-off single to cap a three-run ninth-inning rally that gave the Virginia baseball team a 5-4 victory over Maryland Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field in Game 2 of the NCAA Charlottesville Super Regional. The hit punched the Cavaliers’ fourth trip to the College World Series as UVa won the first two games to clinch the best-of-three series.

UVA left fielder Kevin Doherty watched Maryland coach John Szefc give the signal to closer Kevin Mooney. Four. Mooney was to intentionally walk Joe McCarthy with two outs in the eight inning, runners on second and third, the Terps up one, to get to Doherty, who had gone 0-for-3 on the day against Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn, and had looked ugly on a pair of strikeouts.
