Gov. Bob McDonnell today announced that Virginia has been approved to implement a new healthcare initiative, the Medicare-Medicaid Enrollee (dual eligible) Financial Alignment Demonstration, aimed at coordinating care for more than 78,000 Virginians currently enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine today highlighted more than $2.5 million that’s being made available for 24 Virginia community health centers as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Last year, the 24 eligible health centers served 283,906 Virginians.

Virginia Living’s second annual Best of Virginia issue is now on newsstands. The statewide guide to all that is ‘best’ in Virginia from dining to shopping to doing, Best of Virginia 2013 lists the more than 1,200 winners from Virginia Living’s second annual Best of Virginia Readers’ Survey conducted in January. More than 25,000 votes were cast in 400 categories covering the best in arts, culture and entertainment, living and recreation, shopping and services, and food and drink across the state.

The story of Virginia’s Floras, both past and present, will be told in the Shenandoah Valley on Thursday, at 2 and 7 p.m. at Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) in Weyers Cave. Exploring Virginia’s Botanical History through Three Centuries, featuring Dick Cheatham as John Clayton and Donna Ware as herself, will be the topic of the 75-minute program. The word “flora” is the technical term used by botanists to describe a guide to plants living in a particular area. Thus a Virginia Flora is a guidebook to all the documented plants with sustainable wild populations in the commonwealth.

If Virginia is for music lovers, WVPT viewers can look forward to a new program premiering Saturday, March 23 on the PBS affiliate. Aux Send will feature up and coming independent artists and bands, most of which are Virginia-based.

Central Shenandoah EMS Council is now accepting nominations for its 2013 Regional EMS Awards program. This regional program consists of 11 state level EMS awards and two local awards. The regional recognition program honors the exceptional contributions of EMS providers in the Central Shenandoah Valley make to their communities.

Virginians support allowing students who are homeschooled to participate on local public school sport teams, and they also support allowing school districts to start classes before Labor Day, according to a new statewide survey conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University.
