University of Virginia team wins Governor’s Business Plan Challenge

Timothy Higgins, Andrew Andreae and Jessica Ungerleider, representing the University of Virginia, won the Capital One Grand Prize today at the Governor’s Business Plan Challenge. In recognition of Virginia’s strong entrepreneurial environment, the statewide challenge, co-hosted by Work It, Richmond, featured the best business plans or concepts crafted by undergraduate students this year.
Mercy House youth tell stories of homelessness

The Arts Council of the Valley awarded six Advancing the Arts grants for this 2012-2013 academic year. During March 2013, the creators of Residence and Refuge, a five-week writing and photography workshop made possible by an Advancing the Arts grant, worked closely with the Mercy House after-school program to offer elementary and middle school residents artistic skills with which to tell their stories.
Community groups mobilize for gang prevention project

Glenn Martin, Gang Prevention Program Coordinator with the Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth announces that on Tuesday April 23, 2013, from 3-5:00PM, at the Farrier Court Apartment Complex in Staunton, adults and youth will work side-by-side to complete a community building beautification project which includes an indoor wall mural, and the planting of flowerbeds and trees on facility grounds.

Elizabeth Smart, at 25, has done quite a bit in life. She’s landed a prime gig as a commentator for ABC News. She’s served a Mormon mission in Paris, where she met her future husband, and has a foundation in her name through which she advocates for greater protections for children. That last one is very much personal for Smart, who at age 14 was taken at knifepoint from her Salt Lake City home by a self-proclaimed prophet and his wife, who held her captive for more than nine months.
EMU baseball looking to build winning tradition

As what usually happens with a coaching change, EMU’s first-year skipper, Ben Spotts, is starting at the ground floor. Spotts is taking a Royals program which hasn’t had a winning season since 2002, using the good pieces already in place, and implementing his style.
The Boogie Kings’ Christmas at WTA’s Gateway

One of the Valley’s favorite music trio’s will hold the stage at WTA’s Gateway on Saturday, December 8 at 8 pm. The Boogie Kings will feature music from their Boogie Kings Christmas cd as well as some of their more popular Boogie Kings’ tunes. Also featured will be Kevin Chisnell (Vocalist and Blues Harmonica Specialist).

The Waynesboro Generals announce that legendary Valley League coach Mike Bocock has been added to the coaching staff. Bocock will serve as associate head coach under Coach Derek McDaniel for the remainder of the 2012 season, and will assume duties as head coach following the season
