Rain kills Waynesboro rally, Generals fall, 7-6

wlogo2A late Waynesboro Generals rally was slowed not by the Harrisonburg Turks, but by Mother Nature, in a 7-6, seven-inning loss Tuesday night.

Harrisonburg led 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh with storm clouds making their way to Linco Park. Quinn Griffith (junior, Salisbury) led off the inning with a double. With one out, Julius Gaines singled to left to put two men on. After a JoJo Woods (junior, Central Florida) groundout put runners at second and third with two down, Thomas Stallings (sophomore, VMI) singled to left-center to plate Griffith and Gaines to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Tyler Bocock (sophomore, Stetson) doubled to the gap in right-center on the next pitch to score Stallings and cut the Harrisonburg lead to 7-6. As cleanup hitter Anthony Iacomini (junior, Cortland State) made his way to the batter’s box, lightning brought a halt to the action at 8:54 p.m., and rains came a couple of minutes later.

At 9:19 p.m., the game was called, eliciting an unusually raucous celebration given the circumstances from the Turks dugout.

The Turks won the deciding game of a 2012 playoff series under similar circumstances in Waynesboro.

Woods, Stallings, Bocock and Brian Beard each had two hits for Waynesboro, which falls to 8-10 on the season with the loss.

The Generals return home on Tuesday to play the visiting Front Royal Cardinals. Kris Neal will man the broadcast booth for the game. First pitch is at 7 p.m. Join Kris for the pregame show at 6:55 p.m.
