Press Conference: Butch Davis

North Carolina football coach Butch Davis talks with the media. UNC (6-3, 3-2 ACC) hosts Virginia Tech (7-2, 5-0 ACC) on Saturday.

“A couple things looking back at Saturday, special teams, with the exception of the last kickoff return that put it in jeopardy and peril, I thought our coverage units did a really good job. I thought we did a nice job minimizing the effect of Florida State’s returners.

Defensively the biggest difference from the first half to the second half is one we tackled better. We did a much better job of getting off of blocks and not relying on specific areas of the field. I thought we played much better and it was a tough task for us.

Obviously we got some explosive plays from our offense. T.J. statistically had his best game and I believe it was one of the best games of his career. Given how talented their defense is and the situation in the game. I think even though we gave up five sacks, our offensive line was probably only responsible for one of them.

The one regrettable mistake was the snap over the punter’s head. I think C.J. Feagles and Mark House learned something from that. I think Mark has done just an outstanding job over his career. He has been so good and those guys don’t get luxury that the 22 starters get. If you are the kicker, holder or snapper you have to be perfect every time. There is no margin for error. I love the way the kids went to Mark in the locker room and cheered him up, told him he did a good job.

Looking forward to Virginia Tech you know before you turn on the film there are some things you are always going to see. Your going to see great special teams and have a lot of good special athletes they use. This is complete as a football team can be from a special teams standpoint.

I think defensively Bud Foster is one of the best defensive coordinators in the country. He does an outstanding job all the time. As difficult as it is to prepare for an offense like Georgia Tech, I think Virginia Tech poses the same issues. I think they do a lot of things differently.

Tyrod Taylor is having the best season at quarterback since I’ve been the coach. He can beat you with his arm and his feet, which is something you have always got to be concerned about. I think they have excellent running backs.

It is a good complete football team. They have won seven games in a row and it will be another significant challenge.”
