Zach MacDougall takes men’s soccer coaching job at Shenandoah University

shenandoah universityShenandoah University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Bridget Lyons, Ph.D., announced Friday that Zach MacDougall has accepted the position as the Hornets new head men’s soccer coach.

MacDougall, the sixth head coach in school history, comes to SU after one year as the lead assistant coach at the University of Mary Washington. The Richlands, North Carolina native helped UMW to a 14-1-5 record, a Capital Athletic Conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The UMW staff earned United Soccer Coaches South Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors and is a candidate for national coaching staff of the year.

Prior to his experience in Fredericksburg, MacDougall was the lead assistant at USA South power North Carolina Wesleyan for one year and the top assistant at ODAC rival Randolph College from 2012 through 2017.

At Randolph, he was part of a staff that led the WildCats to a 2013 regular season title and a championship game appearance.

“Zach stood out among the candidates for this position,” Dr. Lyons said. “He has had great success at each stop on his coaching career and has had great mentors at each location.

“We are very happy to welcome Zach to the SU family and have him lead our men’s soccer program.”

MacDougall is a 2011 Randolph College graduate, was part of the ‘Cats inaugural men’s recruiting class and served as the program’s captain in 2009 and 2010.

Following graduation, he served as a high school coach for the 2011 season.

“I am so excited for this opportunity,” MacDougall said. “Having observed this program from a distance, I feel like it has the potential for great success. I look forward to getting started and advancing this program to the top of the ODAC.”
