You suffer from hearing loss: But, do you know what kind?

AFP

hearing lossYou know, generally, that hearing loss is an issue for you, but what you don’t know is specifically what is causing your issue.

There are three types of hearing loss: sensorineural, conductive and mixed hearing loss, which includes components of both.

Before you can properly deal with your issues with hearing, you need to know the type of hearing loss you’re dealing with.

Sensorineural hearing loss

The most common type of loss, this happens when the ear’s sensory cells and/or nerves are damaged or harmed. This occurs often in older adults who lose their hearing gradually over time.

Sensorineural symptoms can include:

  • Inability to hear sounds clearly and fully
  • Requesting frequent repetition of statements
  • Needing to stare at the person speaking to try and “mouth read” their audible words
  • Fatigue from straining to hear

Conductive hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss refers to issues with transferring sound waves due to a blockage or other impediment located between the outer and the inner ear. It could just be earwax. Hearing loss can also be due to a more serious issue, such as damage to the ear, which needs a professional assessment.

Treatment options:

  • Hearing aids (not applicable in all situations).
  • Surgery to repair damage to the eardrum or middle ear, if present.
  • Time may help in less severe cases or those caused by major change in pressure, such as during a flight. This is called barotrauma or aero-otitis media, and generally resolves itself, restoring hearing.
  • Tympanoplasty is a medical intervention that can restore hearing to a perforated – or ruptured – eardrum.
