Remedy Rule, a freshman at Western Albemarle High School, won the 2010/11 swimmer of the year award at the Virginia Swimming awards banquet held on Oct. 2 in Richmond.

Rule was named the female swimmer of the year in the 13/14 year old age group. This is the third consecutive year she has won the award for the top swimmer in her age group in Virginia. Rule swims year-round for the Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club at the Waynesboro YMCA.

She set 21 SMAC Team Records this year, 12 in short course (25 yard pools) and 9 in long course (50 meter pools).  She also broke 4 short course state records (500 free, 100 back, 200 back and 200 fly) and 5 long course state records (200 free, 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly and 200 fly).  She is the only 14-and-under female in Virginia to have ever swum under two minutes in the 200y back or the 200y fly.

Along with teammates Jessie Arnold, Norah Hunt and Olivia Heeb SMAC broke the state record for the 14-and-under girls 800 free relay by over 15 seconds Rule finished in the top 10 in all four of her races at Y Nationals with a best finish of third in the 200 fly.  She qualified for and participated in the USA National Championships and Junior National Championships in Stanford CA this past August.  Her highest finish was sixth place in Junior Nationals in the 200 fly.

The highlight of her summer was qualifying for the 2012 USA Olympic Trials to be held in Omaha, Neb., next June. There are no USA swimmers automatically on the Olympic Team; only the top two finishers in each event at Trials make the Team USA. Rule knows it is a long shot, but the first step is making it to trials.

This is the fourth year in a row in which a SMAC swimmer has been named the Virginia Swimmer of the year. Rule has won the award the past three years and fellow WAHS freshman Max Tempkin won the award in 2008.
