Women’s soccer: VMI takes season opener

vmiLizzy Cotter broke a 0-0 tie in the 19th minute and Emily Marbury recorded her third career shutout as the VMI Keydets defeated the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 1-0, in women’s soccer action Friday in Orangeburg, S.C. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

With the match scoreless in the 19th minute, Cotter was able to find the back of the net against SCSU netminder Katelyn Kern for what would be the lone goal of the game. Kern had come out of the box to corral an attempt by Emma Quirk and was out of position, allowing Cotter to capitalize. It was the first collegiate goal for the senior, and led to VMI’s first non-overtime 1-0 victory over a Division I opponent since Sept. 11, 2010.

The Keydets made Cotter’s goal stand up in the second half by holding the offensive edge for most of the period, as VMI held an 11-5 edge in shots during the frame. Kern stopped six attempts on goal in that period to keep the match close, but SCSU managed just one shot on frame in the final 36 minutes as VMI equaled its earliest win by date in program history.

In the win, the Keydets held an 18-10 edge in shot attempts. It was the first time since Oct. 11 of last season that VMI outshot its opponent. Marbury made six saves to log her first individual clean sheet since Oct. 12, 2014 against Chattanooga, while Kern stopped 10 shots for the homestanding Lady Bulldogs.

VMI women’s soccer will return to action Tuesday, when the Keydets open their home schedule against Hampton at 4 p.m. The match can be seen live on the SoCon Digital Network.
