Women’s soccer: VMI hosts Delaware State on Thursday

vmiEntering its third contest with momentum following a 2-0 start, the VMI women’s soccer team will face the Delaware State Hornets for a Thursday afternoon tilt at home slated for 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.

The Keydets (2-0) are coming off a 5-1 victory over South Carolina State on Monday afternoon, a game that saw the match tied early on at 1-1 before VMI cruised with four unanswered goal en route to the win.

Sierra Brewer scored the first goal in the ninth minute of the game for the quick lead. Julianne Knoblett, Whitney Edwards-Roberson, Kiley Cropper and Rowan Geukgeuzian would go on to notch the other goals in the win and boost the Keydets’ record to 2-0 on the season.

Brewer leads VMI with two goals for the year while Knoblett, Edwards-Roberson, Cropper, Geukgeuzian and senior Taylor Callahan each have one. Knoblett also leads the squad with two assists in two games.

Senior goalkeeper Ceci Keppeler played the entire match against South Carolina State, registering one save in her first victory of the season.

The Keydets are outscoring their opponents by a 7-1 margin to this point of the season and have take 57 shots to nine for the foes. VMI also leads the corner kick advantage, 11 to 7.

About the Hornets (0-2, 0-0 MEAC)

The Hornets opened the season with a 7-0 loss to Hartford at home on Aug. 16 before falling on the road at the hands of Lafayette by a 5-1 score this past Sunday.

Jade Jamison logged the only goal for the Hornets this season against Lafayette as Delaware State was held scoreless against Hartford in the season opener. Jamison has taken three shot attempts this season while Braxton Clark and Alexa Gibbs both have two.
