An early goal from Meredith McDermott held up as Virginia went on the road and shut out #12 Virginia Tech by a score of 1-0 at Thompson Field on Thursday.
The ‘Hoos (12-5-0, 5-5-0 ACC) struck early with a goal off a corner in the 12th minute of play. A pair of shots that were deflected, the second going out over the endline, set up a corner on the right side for Virginia.
Lia Godfrey lifted the corner into the middle of the six, where McDermott volleyed it in for the 1-0 lead over Virginia Tech (11-4-3, 6-2-2 ACC).
Even with the win, Virginia didn’t qualify for the six-team ACC Tournament that kicks off on Sunday.
That’s a function of the depth of the ACC there.
UVA is 12th in the updated RPI rankings.
“I’m really proud of our effort,” UVA coach Steve Swanson said. “It’s always going to be a battle, especially here at Virginia Tech, We have a lot of respect for their team, and we knew we were going to have to have to play 90 minutes. The first half went well for us. The second half, they changed their shape a little bit, and we knew they would press hard; we withstood it a bit. This is a good win and gives us some momentum going into the postseason.”
