vmiA 56th-minute penalty kick goal was the difference as the Saint Peter’s Peacocks defeated the VMI Keydets, 1-0, in non-conference women’s soccer action Friday afternoon in Jersey City, N.J.

After the teams combined for 15 total shots over the first 50 minutes of play, the Keydets (2-2) seemed to be in control early in the second half. VMI attempted the first two shots of the period and forced two saves, but in the 56th minute, was whistled for a foul in the box. Genesis Castrellon put the PK try past VMI goalkeeper Emily Marbury for a 1-0 SPC lead, and that would stand up as the winning margin for Saint Peter’s (1-2-1).

The pace of the match was dominated by the offenses, as both goalkeepers were forced to make double-digit saves. Emily Marbury stopped 10 shots for VMI, while Taylor McLean had 12 saves for Saint Peter’s.

On the day, VMI held a 20-14 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corners.

VMI women’s soccer will return to action Sunday, when the Keydets play host to the IUPUI Jaguars at Patchin Field. Game time is set for1 p.m.
