With Good ReasonWith Good Reason, a radio show and podcast produced by Virginia Humanities, releases “The Birthplace of American Spirits,” an episode that connects the present to the past with an exploration of little-known stories of Virginia spirits – from a 19th-century julep recipe to an event that draws “women who whiskey.” Later in the show, hear about the holiday foods consumed by multicultural families.

In this episode:

  • Sarah Hand Meachum (Virginia Commonwealth University), author of “Every Home a Distillery,” joins us for a tasting with Ironclad Distillery and Vitae Spirits.
  • Lytton Musselman (Old Dominion University) talks about why he loves the distinct differences in flavor of the liquor and spirits he makes from wild roots, berries, and mushrooms.
  • Delores Phillips (Old Dominion University) researches how multicultural families deal with holiday foods that will be on the table at this time of year.

“The Birthplace of American Spirits,” is available today. Find it on local public radio, on popular podcatchers including iTunes and Google and on With Good Reason’s websiteWith Good Reason publishes weekly and is available for free.
