An RBI single by Ben Boykin and a an RBI double by Julius Gaines broke open a close game late and helped Waynesboro to an 11-7 win over Strasburg Friday night.
Gaines (sophomore, Florida International) was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, and also made a pair of dazzling catches on line drives that cost the Express three runs – one on a sinking line drive by Anthony Payne with a runner at second and two outs in the third, the second on a liner off the bat of Douglas Ruhlman with runners on second and third and one out in the eighth.
Boykin (junior, College of Charleston) was 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Patrick Mazeika (freshman, Stetson) was 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs.
Waynesboro had 14 hits – its third straight double-digit hit night in a row.
The win improves the Generals to 3-0 in the month of July and 12-14 overall.
Sean Bucholz (junior, Southern Miss) picked up the win with two and a third innings of relief, giving up two runs on three hits.
Kyle Allen (sophomore, Butler) earned his first save of the season with an inning and a third of scoreless relief.
Waynesboro is on the road Saturday at Charles Town.
