Waynesboro stores hit with bogus $100 bills

The Waynesboro Police Department is investigating a rash of counterfeit $100 bill being passed at city stores earlier in the week.  During the afternoon on Monday, September 14, a male suspect visited several retailers and made small purchases paying for them with $100 bills.

The bills were later determined to be counterfeit.  At many of the stores, cashiers checked the fake bills with a pen used to check the legitimacy of paper currency.  The use of the pens did not detect that the bills were counterfeit.  The majority of the fake bills were discovered when the stores made their daily deposits at the same bank.  Police took one report Monday night and five Tuesday afternoon.

The stores involved are as follows:

• Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Roses, Family Dollar, Rite Aid Pharmacy and CVS Pharmacy.

The suspect is described a bald black male in his 20s or 30s and possibly having a Spanish speaking accent.
