bridgewaterBridgewater College associate music professor Larry Taylor will present an eclectic keyboard concert on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m., in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College.

Utilizing the piano, organ and harpsichord, Taylor will explore extremes in musical style and purpose. The program features a series of short works that demonstrate the versatility of the instruments.

The concert includes a hunting song, a chorale-based organ fugue, a baroque sonata, a lied, a classical rondo, a romantic opera transcription and a mazurka. The program will demonstrate examples of minimalism, impressionism, ragtime and an avant-garde piece performed on the strings of the piano.

Bethanie Glover, a senior music and communication studies double major with a minor in theatre, will provide commentary to guide the audience on this journey through a wide range of musical genres. Glover will also serve as vocalist for several of the pieces. She is the daughter of David and Kara Beth Glover of Waynesboro, Va.

Taylor is associate professor and chair of the music department. He is also the music director at Luray United Methodist Church. He holds a doctor of musical arts degree in organ from the University of Cincinnati, where he won the Strader Organ Competition. He has composed several anthems and cantatas including the song cycleMarie Curie (text by Tom Noe) and the opera Eros and Psyche (libretto by Noe). In addition to solo recitals on piano and organ, Taylor has arranged and performed accompaniments on organ for silent films including Charlie Chaplin’sThe Gold Rush and Buster Keaton’s One Week.

The concert is free and open to the public.
