Waynesboro Public Library provides hands-on learning for kids

box guitarsScience, technology, engineering, art, and math have all come together as the basis for a new program available at Waynesboro Public Library (WPL). MasterMinds helps children K-5 explore these subjects on Thursday afternoons at 4:00 pm.

STEAM lessons are highlighted in school curriculums and WPL makes them fun with hands-on, project-based exploration. “In MasterMinds, we won’t be afraid to make a mess. Things will explode and get wet,” said Claire Covington, Assistant Director and mastermind behind the program.

In addition to building with Legos, participants have already made catapults and box guitars, explored soaring and gliding with the Shenandoah Valley Soaring Club, and discovered what sinks and floats. Some upcoming activities include drawing in 3D and candy engineering.

As a supplement to the MasterMinds program, a blog with STEAM ideas for parents and teachers is available on the library’s website, www.waynebsoropubliclibrary.org. It can be found in Parent Teacher Resources under the Youth Services tab.

MasterMinds programming has been provided for in part by the Library of Virginia, which has supplied science project kits, and a grant from the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge.
