Funding for phase two of the Downtown Waynesboro streetscape improvement project has been approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, the city announced on Wednesday.

The $486,000 grant would go toward improvements on West Main Street between Wayne Avenue and Church Street. A grant application for the funds was submitted by the city in December 2009.

The city will have to provide a 20 percent local match to the federal funds. That local match can come from labor and in-kind services related to the project work.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2006.

Improvements in phase two of the project will include new street lamps, sidewalk improvements, brick pavers in key locations, landscaping and street furniture.

The initial phase of the streetscape project between Arch Avenue and Wayne Avenue was completed in 2008 also utilizing an Enhancement Program grant.
