Waynesboro Generals Midseason Report

Calendar 2013Since starting 2013 with losses at home to Staunton and on the road at Covington, Waynesboro has only been able to climb back to the .500 mark just twice, and is now mired in a three-game losing streak has fallen a season-high four games under .500 at the midway point to the Valley League season.

Looking inside the numbers, it’s not hard to tell why.

Holes in the lineup: Waynesboro hitters at catcher, first base and designated hitter have combined to hit .181 with a .299 on-base percentage.

Third base defense: Generals defenders at the third sack have committed a combined 15 errors in 87 chances for an abysmal .828 fielding percentage. The woes at third have contributed to the team’s standing at 10th in the VBL in fielding percentage (.951) and eighth in unearned runs allowed (29).

Speed kills: Waynesboro is 10th in stolen bases (24). In 2012, the Generals were second in steals with 71 on the season.

Power outage: Just four homers for Waynesboro in 2013, after hitting 44 in 2012. Runs per game (4.7), batting average (.258), slugging percentage (.326) and on-base percentage (.346) are also down significantly.

Solid pitching: Waynesboro is fifth in team ERA (3.98).

Runs for/runs against: Waynesboro has scored 104 runs and given up 115 runs through 22 games. Pretty much the profile of a team struggling to get to .500

 

Bright spots

Tyler Bocock: The Stetson sophomore is hitting .360 (fifth in the league) with 32 hits (third in the league) while playing a solid shortstop.

JoJo Woods: The Central Florida junior is hitting .306 with a .429 on-base percentage with a team-leading 18 runs scored (good for fourth in the VBL).

Chad Farmer: The Appalachian State junior lefthander is 1-1 with a 0.94 ERA in 17 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts and seven walks.

Taylor Sandefur: Since giving up five runs in a third of an inning against Staunton on Opening Night, Sandefur has been dominant, giving up two earned runs in 18 innings of work (1.00 ERA). For the season, Sandefur is 1-1 with a 3.43 ERA with 12 strikeouts and four walks and 13 hits allowed in 18 and a third innings.
