Waynesboro Generals lose Game 1 of VBL Championship Series, 6-0

wlogo2Waynesboro could muster just three hits, and Strasburg used three home runs and dominant pitching to batter the Generals in Game 1 of the Valley League Championship Series, 6-0, Sunday night.

Starting pitcher Patrick McGavin gave up two hits in six innings of work, atriking out seven and walking three. The Generals did load the bases against McGavin in the sixth with two out, but a liner off the bat of Brian Beard (freshman, Old Dominion) to short left was caught by  Andrew Kubuski to end that threat.

Waynesboro loaded the bases again in the seventh with one out, but Tyler Bocock (sophomore, Stetson) struck out for out number two, and a ground ball off the bat of Patrick Mazeika (freshman, Stetson) led to a controversial force-out call at second base by umpire Greg Howard, who ruled that a throw from shortstop Tyler McDonald to second baseman Johnny Schiotis that was clearly late nonetheless beat JoJo Woods (junior, Central Florida) to the bag.

Those two aborted rallies were effectively it offensively for Waynesboro, which went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings.

Jeff Conley (junior, Alderson-Broaddus) took the loss for Waynesboro, giving up four runs on five hits in three innings of work. Latten Gailbraith (junior, Louisiana Tech) had a nice outing in relief for Waynesboro, giving up two runs on two hits in five innings of work, striking out three and walking one.

Waynesboro hosts Game 2 of the best-of-three series Monday night at Linco Park at Kate Collins Field. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
