Wayne Theatre Arts Education series brings affordable live theatre to all ages

Chris Graham

wayne arts educationThe Wayne Theatre Alliance/Ross Performing Arts Center brings live performing arts to all ages this spring. The performances are meant to engage audience members in a meaningful way and cultivate an appreciation for the performing arts.

The schedule kicks off April 11 with “I Have a Dream” presented by Theatre IV. Other shows in the series include “The Frog Prince,” “Wonderful World of Simple Machines,” Ooey Gooey Poetry, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” “The Little Red Hen,” and juggler Mark Nizer.

“We are excited to offer educational programming for all ages,” said Tracy Straight, executive director of the Wayne Theatre/Ross Performing Arts Center. “Our goal for the programming is to offer the lowest possible price so that everyone may enjoy the arts.”

Community organizations like the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club have stepped up to support the Arts Education program. The Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the cost of bringing the entire Wayne Hills Preschool to an upcoming performance for a field trip.

Waynesboro Kiwanis Club member Bob Barnette summed up the group’s support by saying it was an honor to help provide the first opportunity for many of these young people to attend a live performance. He also said he believes that it will help shape their lives for the future.

“We are so excited to host preschools, elementary schools and even middle and high school students at our arts education performances,” Straight said. “We also look forward to welcoming senior centers or members of the public to take in the live programming.”

Each weekday performance in the series has two show times – 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tickets to each show are only $7.50 per person, and all performances are open to the public. Advance tickets are recommended and available online at waynetheatre.org/arts-education-program/. Tickets are also available at the box office Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by phone at (540) 943-9999.

The support and generosity of the Virginia Commission for the Arts and Arts Education sponsors like the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club allows the Wayne Theatre to make these programs accessible to everyone in the Shenandoah Valley, Central Virginia and beyond.

“The Wayne is a place for all ages to be educated, enhanced, enlightened and enchanted,” said Straight.
