Wayne Theatre Alliance announces inaugural John Curry Classic Golf Tournament

Chris Graham

curryJudge John Curry’s untimely death left a hole in the Wayne Theatre Alliance and indeed in the whole of Waynesboro and Augusta County.  He was known as a man who dedicated his life to helping others and causes that he felt would have an impact on the community he loved. He was also an avid golfer who was known to forgo a meeting in order to play a round of 18 at the best courses across the South.

To recognize John’s dedication to the greater community and particularly to Wayne Theatre Capital Campaign and his love of the game of golf, WTA’s Board of Directors has named its annual golf tournament to honor Judge Curry.

“John was always glad to get a foursome together to play in a golf tournament for any worthy cause,” said his widow, Theresa Curry, “but certainly no cause was closer to his heart than the Wayne Theatre. Speaking also for his daughters, we are so glad that his friends at the Wayne Theatre are honoring him in this thoughtful and very fitting way. My hope is that the Wayne will find new supporters in the community who will come forward to honor John.”

The John Curry Classic Golf Tournament will be held at the Waynesboro Country Club on September 11 at 1:00pm.  Tracy Straight, the chair of the 2015 tournament, said, “We are working to make this an annual tournament that John would have been proud to have his name connected.  We want this to be a reminder of all he did for the community, not just the Wayne.”

Teams for the September 11th tournament are being formed now. Entry fees are $125 per person/ $500 per team and include lunch, beverages, gift bags and chances to win a wide selection of team and individual prizes.  Sign up forms are available at www.waynetheatre.org or by calling 540-943-9999.

The John Curry Golf Tournament is sponsored by Virginia Panel, Star 94.5 and Green Leaf Grill.  Other sponsorship opportunities are available.
