Washington Redskins fall in finale, expected to fire Mike Shanahan

Three losing seasons in four years, and an eight-game losing streak to finish out 2013, and that appears to be it for Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan.

redskins-helmetMultiple reports have Shanahan getting fired as early as Sunday night. Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls in the 1990s with the Denver Broncos, would finish his tenure in D.C. with a 24-40 record.

Washington won the NFC East in 2012 with a 10-6 record in quarterback Robert Griffin III’s first season, but Shanahan and RG3 could never get on the same page in year two. Griffin was held out of the preseason after suffering a torn ACL in the Skins’ playoff loss to Seattle in January, and was rarely sharp in 2013.

RG3 in 2013 passed for 3,203 yards and 16 touchdowns with 12 interceptions and an 82.2 quarterback rating and ran for 489 yards and no touchdowns, after throwing for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and just five INTs and a 102.4 QB rating and running for 815 yards and seven touchdowns in 2012.

Griffin finished the 2013 season on the inactive list for the final three games as Shanahan benched the #2 pick in the 2012 draft in favor of 2012 fourth-round pick Kirk Cousins, who threw for 685 yards and four TDs with five passes intercepted and a quarterback rating of 70.7.

Washington lost to the New York Giants on Sunday by a final of 20-6. Cousins was 19-for-49 passing for 169 yards with two interceptions for a 31.8 passer rating as the Redskins gained just 251 yards of total offense and scored just two second-quarter field goals.
