The Washington and Lee University poverty studies program and VMI will host a symposium addressing the relationship between food and childhood health on Sunday on the two campuses in Lexington.
Some 90 interns from 21 colleges who spent eight weeks this summer working in impoverished communities will share their experiences and hear presentations from three national advocates for improving children’s nutrition: Dr. Sandra Hassink, president of the American Academy of Pediatricians; Elaine Waxman, VP-nutrition and research of Feeding America; and Victoria Kumpuris Brown, a W&L alumna, senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and former representative of the Alliance for Healthier Generations. The speakers and interns will be available for news interviews.
All three sessions of the fourth annual Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty will take place in VMI’s Marshall Hall, home of the institute’s Center for Leadership and Ethics. The symposium is free and open to the public.
