Voth shuts out Richmond: Flying Squirrels fall to .500

Harrisburg Senators right-hander Austin Voth continued to stymie the Richmond Flying Squirrels (67-67) on Tuesday night in a 5-0 shutout at Metro Bank Park. Voth earned the win with seven shutout innings and he has not allowed a run to the Squirrels in 27 innings pitched this year. Devin Harris had two of the three hits in the game against Voth in the loss. The defeat moves Richmond to as many as four games out of a playoff spot with only six remaining (four home games). Game three of the series is on Wednesday night with RHP Chase Johnson making the start for Richmond,

The Senators pushed across a run to support Voth early in the first inning against the Squirrels starting pitcher Matt Lujan. Brain Goodwin singled with one out and moved to third on a double that barely dropped fair down the left field line. Shawn Pleffner then hit a grounder to first and Ricky Oropesa attempted to throw out the Goodwin coming home from third, but it missed wildly for a 1-0 Harrisburg lead. Chris Bostick extended the Senators lead in the third inning with a two-run homer into the Ollie’s Cheap Seats in left field. Harrisburg continued to apply pressure on Lujan in the inning by loading the bases, but Lujan struck out Derrick Robinson to keep it a 3-0 game.

Lujan (8-6) managed to settle in after the rough first three innings. The lefty hurled six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings of work. Phil McCormick relived Lujan to start the night and hurled a 1-2-3 inning. McCormick leads the Eastern League in appearances with 55 on the year

Voth (6-7) was finally removed after the top of the seventh. He hurled seven shutout innings to earn the win and allowed just three hits. Voth has symied the Squirrels all season long. The righty has not allowed run in his four starts against Richmond, a span of 27 innings. Devin collected a pair of hits in the loss including a ball that just missed being a home run off the top of the 16’ wall in left centerfield. Kyle Crick pitched the eighth inning and allowed a run to for a 5-0 game. It was the 16^th time this year the Squirrels offense has been shutout.

The Squirrels eight game road trip continues Wednesday night with game three of four in Harrisburg. Squirrels RHP Chase Johnson (0-1, 7.27) will make the start against Senators RHP Brian Rauh (2-4, 5.34).
