Voter registration deadline is Oct. 13

constitutionVirginia is an election-every-year state, and there’s another one coming ’round the bend. The voter registration deadline for the Nov. 3 general election comes next Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Eligible Virginians can use the Department of Elections online system available at elections.virginia.gov/register to check their registration status, update their information, or register to vote for the first time.  The paperless process requires authentication using your Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) information.  Voters without a DMV identification number can still use the system to provide their information and print a completed registration form to send to their local voter registration office.

“Virginia is one of only 25 states to offer online voter registration,” said Edgardo Cortés, the Commissioner of Elections.  “The Department of Elections is pleased to offer the convenience and security of online voter registration to help make voter registration more accessible for our citizens,” he added.

Ways to register to vote in Virginia and be eligible to vote in the November 3, 2015 election:

  • Register on-line @ elections.virginia.gov/register
  • Apply in-person at their local voter registration office by 5:00pm on October 13, 2015.
  • Mail a completed voter registration form to their local office or the Department of Elections with a postmark of October 13, 2015 or earlier.

Voter registration forms are available at all DMV customer service centers, social service offices, locations that offer hunting and fishing licenses, and many other public locations such as local libraries.

To be eligible to register to vote in the November 3, 2015 election, a person must:

  • be a U.S. Citizen
  • be a resident of Virginia
  • be 18 years old on or before November 3, 2015
  • have your right to vote restored if convicted of a felony
  • not be currently adjudicated mentally incapacitated by a court of law

To get more information about registering to vote, contact information for your local voter registration office, or information about absentee voting, visit the Department of Elections website at elections.virginia.gov or call toll-free at (800) 552-9745.
