VMI’s D.J. Covington was named First Team Preseason All-Conference at the Big South Basketball Media Day, held Thursday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. As a team, the Keydets were predicted to finish fourth in the North Division.

vmi_logoCovington, last year’s Big South Defensive Player of the Year, tied for the conference lead in blocks per game with 3.0 per contest, a mark that also put him in the top 10 in Division I. He set a new school record with his 93 blocks and moved into third in VMI history in that stat, while offensively, he averaged 15 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest, both easily career highs.

In the team balloting, the Keydets received two first-place votes, but finished 11 points behind third-place Radford in the tabulation, 104 to 93. High Point (25 first-place votes, 175 pts.) was predicted to win the division, with Liberty finishing second (137 pts.). Charleston Southern, who grabbed 28 of 30 potential first-place votes, was the near unanimous pick in the South Division.

Keydet basketball begins its season Nov. 8, taking on The Citadel at 3:30 at Cameron Hall as part of this year’s All-Military Classic. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
