VMI spring football update

Chris Graham

vmi footballVMI Football conducted its second scrimmage of the spring football practice period Saturday, April 23 at Fiorini Field with the Keydets running close to 50 plays during the afternoon.

VMI head football coach Scott Wachenheim had the following summary after the scrimmage:

“I thought the defense really had a great day today and they are really doing at great job tackling. Impressed with the tackling at this point and that’s really been a point of emphasis for them and they’ve been very efficient.  The offense for the second straight week  in a row did not turn the ball over, so that’s a huge improvement over last year and that’s been a huge point of emphasis. Quarterback Al Cobb and the backs and Coach Tim Maypray (running backs) are doing a great job. We dropped a couple of passes today and we need to do a better job with some of the young receivers bringing the ball in. The defense has been aggressive in practice – in Friday’s scrimmage we actually had three interceptions ,  Greg Sanders (safety) broke on a slant route and returned it for a touchdown. One of the more impressive plays I’ve seen him make since I’ve been here. The defense generated some turnovers on Friday and the offense fixed the issues on Saturday. Al Cobb is way ahead of where he was last year and I think he’s comfortable in the offense and knows what he can do and he is functioning at a very high level.”

VMI will conduct its final week of practices with workouts slated for Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and the final scrimmage on Saturday afternoon.

Wachenheim also announced that next Saturday’s scrimmage will take place again at Fiorini Field as the Foster Stadium natural surface continues to recover from maintenance.
