VMI to open 2016-17 basketball season at Richmond

vmiVirginia Military Institute will open the 2016-17 basketball season at the University of Richmond on Friday, November 11. A preliminary release of the finalized dates of the Keydet slate was made public on Tuesday.

The opener with the Spiders at the Robins Center in Richmond will be the 128th meeting on the hardwood between the state rivals and the first time the schools have met since the 2009-10 season.

Other non-conference matchups include a December 10 contest at Big 12 member West Virginia marking the fourth time over the last six seasons the teams have met. The Keydets will travel to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech for the fifth straight season and will square off against the Hokies November 19 at Cassell Coliseum. The Keydets will play at Dayton December 23.

VMI will face Frostburg State coached by VMI alumnus Webb Hatch (‘69) on December 20.

The Keydets will also play five members of the Big South Conference during the first four weeks of the season. VMI will host Campbell (Nov. 26), Gardner-Webb (Dec. 3) and Charleston Southern (Dec. 13) at Cameron Hall and will travel to play Presbyterian College (Nov. 22) and Radford (Nov. 30). VMI played in the Big South for 11 seasons from 2003-04 through 2013-14.

VMI will open up its 18-game Southern Conference schedule at home against Samford on December 31 in Lexington.

Game times and ticket information for the 2016-17 VMI Basketball schedule will be announced later in the year.
