VMI right-handed pitcher Josh Winder has been selected by the Minnesota Twins in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft, held by conference call Tuesday afternoon. Winder becomes the third-highest draft pick in VMI baseball history, trailing just Andy Beasley (4th, 1990) and Ryan Glynn (4th, 1995).
After a year that saw Winder be named Second Team All-SoCon, he sits second in school history in both strikeouts and walks per nine innings, fourth in games started, and as the school’s all-time leader in strikeouts per nine innings.
“It’s an honor to be selected by the Minnesota Twins,” said Winder. “Playing professional baseball has been my dream since I was a little kid, and for that to come true is unbelievable. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates and coaches for helping me to get where I am today.”
Winder is the first player to be drafted out of VMI by the Twins, and only the third Keydet selected by an AL Central team.
