Virginia Tech’s Jarell Eddie ACC Player of the Week

Virginia Tech senior forward Jarell Eddie has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week, while North Carolina freshman forward Kennedy Meeks unanimously earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors.

vatechThe 6-foot-7 Eddie led the Hokies to a pair of wins, including a 61-60 overtime road victory at defending ACC champion Miami in Sunday’s conference opener. Eddie led all scorers with 24 points in the win over the Hurricanes and added seven rebounds. He was 6-of-14 from 3-point range. Eddie scored the Hokies’ final 11 points in regulation and the winning points in the overtime period.

Last Tuesday night, Eddie scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 81-63 win over Winthrop. Eddie was forced to play both guard spots in addition to his usual small forward position due to injuries for the Hokies. The Charlotte, N.C., native was 13-of-18 from the field, including a career-high tying 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

North Carolina’s Meeks averaged 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in wins at top-ranked Michigan State and at home vs. UNC Greensboro. Meeks led the Tar Heels with 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win over Michigan State. Meeks scored 11 second-half points as UNC out-scored the Spartans, 47-33, in the period. He also had an assist on a key three-pointer by Marcus Paige.

The 6-foot-9 Meeks, who also hails from Charlotte, N.C., added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds in the win over UNCG. He was 12-of-18 from the floor in the two wins.
