The seventh-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team dropped an overtime contest, 10-9, at Virginia Tech on Saturday (April 7). Senior attacker Josie Owen (Gibson Island, Md.) scored four goals, including the 100th of her career, to lead the Cavaliers.
Virginia’s record went to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. With their first-ever win over UVa in women’s lacrosse, the Hokies improved to 8-5 overall, 1-3 in league play and 1-17 all-time vs. the Cavaliers.
Virginia Tech’s Jessica Nonn scored four goals, including the Hokies’ final three and the game-winner with 2:11 left in overtime.
In addition to her four goals, Owen added one assist for five points. Katie Slater (Kensington, Md.) scored two goals and Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) and Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) added one apiece for Virginia.
After a 33-minute delay to start the game because of a malfunctioning scoreboard, Virginia got on the board first with Stephens’ fifth goal of the season at the 28:04 mark.
Virginia Tech responded with three unanswered goals and took a 3-1 lead midway through the period, but Virginia rallied with three-consecutive goals of its own to take a 4-3 lead on Blue’s goal with 12:35 remaining in the half.
From there, each team scored one more goal as Virginia led, 5-4, at halftime.
In the second half, Virginia maintained its one-goal lead until the 23:17 mark, when Hokie attacker RyanRotanz collected the rebound of her own shot and finished to tie the score at 6-6.
From there, Virginia got back-to-back goals from Owen and Slater to earn an 8-6 cushion, but theHokies connected on a goal of their own at the 9:20 mark to pull back within one goal, 8-7.
On the ensuing draw, Virginia Tech controlled possession and proceeded to score on a free position goal by Nonn with 5:48 left in the game to tie the game at 8-8.
The Hokies controlled the next draw as well, and Nonn again found the back of the net,this time with 1:16 remaining.
Facing a 9-8 deficit, Virginia earned the draw control by Megan Dunleavy (Fairfax Station, Va.) and went to work on the offensive end.
Owen got off two shots in the waning minute, the second of which found the back of the net for the equalizer with 30 seconds left.
The first overtime period ended with no score and Virginia Tech struck first in the second overtime. With 2:11 remaining, Nonn again was the goal-scorer to put the Hokies up, 10-9.
Virginia Tech earned the next draw control and held possession for the remainder of the game.
Virginia sophomore goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) earned the start for an injured Kim Kolarik (Riva, Md.) and finished with three saves.
Virginia Tech held a slight advantage in shots, 19-18. The Cavaliers held 7-5 and 13-10 advantages in ground balls and draw controls, respectively.
In goal for Virginia Tech, Alex Gale had five saves.
Up next, UVa continues its road swing with a Wednesday (April 11) contest at Johns Hopkins. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be nationally televised by ESPNU.
