Miami scored on its second play from scrimmage. Virginia Tech dominated from there, getting 408 total yards and no turnovers from quarterback logan thomas and another strong defensive effort en route to a surprisingly easy 42-24 win.

vatechThe Tech defense gave up 352 yards, but 165 of those yards came on long touchdown passes to Stacy Coley and Allen Hurns. The Coley touchdown gave Miami (7-2, 3-2 ACC) an early 7-0 lead, but a trio of Hurricanes special-team mistakes that followed, fumbles on a punt return and kickoff return and a bad snap on a UM punt that forced punter Pat O’Donnell to take a knee inside the Miami 20, led to three Trey Edmunds first-half touchdowns and reversed the early momentum.

A Dallas Crawford 2-yard TD run brought the ‘Canes to within 21-14 at the 8:30 mark of the second quarter, but Virginia Tech responded with a five-and-a-half-minute drive that ended with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to Joshua Stanford that made it 28-14 Tech at the half.

Miami twice cut the lead to 11 points in the second half, but the Hokies responded in the third quarter with a Thomas TD pass to Demitri Knowles and in the fourth on Edmunds’ fourth touchdown run of the game to put it away.

Thomas was 25-for-31 for 366 yards and two touchdowns passing and added 42 yards on the ground.

Edmunds ran 14 times for 74 yards and the four TDs.

Virginia Tech (7-3, 4-2 ACC) gained 549 yards of total offense.
