State Police investigate Interstate 81 crash in Augusta County

interstate 81Virginia State Police was notified of a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 81 at approximately 7:06 a.m. near the 208 mile marker in Augusta County on Monday.

The SUV was traveling northbound on I-81. The driver attempted to change lanes and lost control, overcorrected and struck a guardrail. The vehicle then overturned in the median. The crash caused a child passenger to be ejected into the median.

The passenger, Luis Ribera, a 10-month old boy, of Rockbridge County, was initially transported by ambulance to Augusta Health Center with serious injuries and later taken to UVA Medical Center.

The driver, Lucina Guillen Cruz, 21, of Rockbridge County, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. She has been charged with reckless driving, driving without a license, and improperly securing a child in a car seat.

The driver and child passenger were the only occupants in the vehicle.

Speed is considered a factor in the crash which is being investigated by Sr. Trooper J.G. O’Gorek.
