Virginia snaps losing skid, blasts Pack, 33-6

Virginia still can’t decide on a quarterback. One thing the Cavs were able to decide on Saturday – a game plan that kept N.C. State’s high-powered offense in check.

UVa. held N.C. State to 28 yards on the ground and hounded fifth-year senior QB Mike Glennon, and got solid efforts from part-time signal-callers Phillip Sims and Mike Rocco in a dominating 33-6 victory in Raleigh.

The Cavaliers (3-6, 1-4 ACC) had come into the game on a six-game losing streak, while State (5-3, 2-3 ACC) came in still entertaining thoughts of playing its way into the ACC title game or at the least a major bowl. Those hopes died an ugly death as the Cavs jumped on the board on their first drive, getting a one-yard TD run from Sims to go up 7-0.

UVa. coach Mike London shuttled Sims and Rocco throughout the game. Rocco led the ‘Hoos on their second scoring drive of the day, connecting with Darius Jennings on an 18-yard scoring pass that made it 14-0 at the end of one quarter.

The second quarter was a battle of field position eventually won by UVa. when Glennon was pressured into an intentional-grounding call in the end zone that resulted in a safety and a 16-0 halftime lead.

Virginia added more cushion in the third quarter on a 38-yard scoring strike from Sims to Tim Smith that made it 23-0.

A Drew Jarrett 33-yard field goal nine seconds into the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 26-0. N.C. State finally got on the scoreboard midway through the final period on a 2-yard TD pass from Glennon to Mario Carter.

A 31-yard TD run by Kevin Parks on a fourth-and-one play put the final points on the scoreboard.

Sims was 8-for-10 passing for 115 yards. Rocco was 12-for-23 for 83 yards.

Parks had 25 carries for 115 yards.

Glennon was 23-for-46 passing for 195 yards and one touchdown with three passes intercepted.
