virginia film festivalThe Virginia Film Festival has announced the launch of its 2016 Call for Entries, inviting filmmakers from around the state, region, and throughout the world to submit feature films, documentaries, shorts, animation, and experimental works for consideration for the 29th annual Virginia Film Festival, scheduled for November 3-6.

VFF officials also announced today that the Festival has also launched the application process for its 2016 Action! High School Directors Competition.

The Virginia Film Festival is presented by the University of Virginia and the Office of the Provost and Vice Provost for the Arts.

“The Call for Entries plays an integral part of our programming process by allowing us to continually expand the universe of filmmaking voices and talents we are able to share with our audiences each year,” said Virginia Film Festival Director and UVA Vice Provost for the Arts Jody Kielbasa. “Last year, Programmer Wesley Harris and I were able to identify and bring in more than 150 filmmakers to share and discuss their work and in the process continue to enhance our reputation as one of the premier regional film festivals in the country. We look forward to continuing this tradition as we move forward, and the Call for Entries is an important vehicle through which to do that.”

This year filmmakers can make their submissions online at virginiafilmfestival.org/submit-a-film/. Once again, Virginia residents and students at Virginia schools are eligible to have their entry fees waived. The fees for non-Virginia filmmakers submitting by the regular deadline of June 13 will be $35 for features and $15 for shorts. Those submitting by the extended deadline of July 25 may do so for $50 for features and $25 for shorts. The fee for students outside of Virginia to submit a film is $10.

Once again this year, the Virginia Film Festival is inviting high school students to explore their passion for filmmaking by entering ACTION! The VFF’s High School Director Competition. The competition is open to rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are current residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia. There is no entry fee.

Prizes will be awarded to three filmmaking teams, including a Grand Prize of $1,000 and two (2) ACTION! Runner-Up prizes of $500 each.

Students looking to get more information or submit their films can visit virginiafilmfestival.org/action and fill out the electronic entry form, which requires a link to an online screener, by Wednesday, August 17.
