The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced the state’s crop production forecast based on conditions as of August 1. This information comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
Corn production in Virginia was forecast at 53.4 million bushels, up 5 percent from the previous crop. Yield was estimated at 157 bushels per acre, up 12 bushels from the 2014 level. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 340,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from 2014.
Soybean production for Virginia is forecast at 27.7 million bushels, increased 8 percent from 2014. Yield was estimated at 42 bushels per acre, up 2.5 bushels from a year ago. Farmers expect to harvest 660,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from 2014.
Virginia farmers expect to harvest 14.2 million bushels of winter wheat during 2015. The expected crop for 2015 would be down 20 percent from the previous year. Growers expect a yield of 63 bushels per acre, down 5 bushels from 2014 and down 4 bushels from July. Farmers expect to harvest 225,000 acres for grain, down 35,000 acres from 2014.
Barley producers in Virginia forecast harvesting 1.52 million bushels for 2015, down 31 percent from last year. Acres expected to be harvested for grain total 19,000 acres, down 9,000 acres from last year. Producers expect a yield of 80 bushels per acre, unchanged from last month but up 1 bushel from 2014.
Virginia cotton production is projected to be 210,000 bales, down 5 percent from last year. Cotton yields are forecast to average 1,200 pounds per acre, down 39 pounds per acre from the previous year. Producers expect to harvest 84,000 acres, down 2,000 acres from 2015.
Peanut farmers in Virginia anticipate harvesting 92 million pounds for 2015, up 11 percent from last year. Acres expected to be harvested total 23,000 acres, up 4,000 acres from last year. Producers expect a yield of 4,000 pounds per acre, down 350 pounds from 2014.
Virginia burley tobacco production was forecast at 2.08 million pounds, down 29 percent from 2014. Yield was projected at 1,600 pounds per acre, down 350 pounds from the 2014 crop. Harvested acreage was estimated at 1,300 acres, down 200 acres from last year’s crop. Production of Virginia dark fire-cured tobacco was forecast at 805,000 pounds, up 11 percent from the previous year. Flue cured tobacco production was forecast at 51.5 million pounds, down 5 percent from last year.
Production of hay by Virginia farmers was forecast to be down slightly from last year. Alfalfa hay production is forecast at 232,000 tons, 9 percent below the 2014 level. Other hay production was estimated at 2.42 million tons, down slightly from last year.
