Virginia casts electoral votes for Clinton, Kaine

virginia electoral votesVirginia’s 13 electors met today in the Senate Chamber of the State Capitol to vote for president and vice president of the United States of America.

Secretary of the Commonwealth Kelly Thomasson gave opening remarks at the ceremony. Electors vote across the nation today for president and vice president.  The Electoral College votes for the two offices separately, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution.  The electors voted for Secretary Hillary Clinton for president and Senator Tim Kaine for vice president.

In Virginia, there is an elector from each Congressional district, in addition to two at large electors. The number of electors each state has is based on the number of U.S. representatives and senators from that state.

A joint session of Congress is scheduled for January 6, 2017 to certify the results of the Electoral College vote, with Vice President Joseph Biden presiding as president of the Senate. Once the results are certified, the president-elect will be sworn in on January 20, 2017.

The Virginia Department of Elections encourages all citizens to learn more about the Electoral College and the electoral process by visiting the Virginia Department of Elections’ website:  www.elections.virginia.gov/electoral-college.

There are links to video of the proceedings, names of Electors and Pages, historical documents gathered by the Library of Virginia as well as educational resources for classroom use.  The website is a result of interagency collaboration and it is unique in its multidisciplinary approach to inform and educate all citizens.
