TMZ is reporting today that the NYPD received a “bunch of calls” triggered by the storyline arrest of WWE chairman Vince McMahon on Monday Night Raw.
Which sounds about right, based on personal experience. More on that in a moment.
Back to the McMahon arrest. It all got going in an awkward scene at the top of the show involving McMahon and WWE champ Roman Reigns, who is being positioned as a new age Stone Cold Steve Austin, without the charisma.
McMahon confronted Reigns about his attack on WWE Chief Operating Officer Triple H, and tried to feign an injury to justify getting Reigns arrested.
Down the ramp at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn came Stephanie McMahon with members of New York’s Finest in tow, but the rent-a-cops didn’t comply with the McMahons’ request to arrest Reigns, and when Vince McMahon grabbed one of the cops by the collar, he was the one who ended up in cuffs.
The drama played out throughout the episode, culminating in McMahon bailing himself out and returning to the arena to confront Reigns again, predictably.
Tired, yes.
Now to personal experience. When I was the head writer for upstart Awesome Wrestling Entertainment in 2011, we ran an angle using social media to build a storyline that ended with the main event at the Night of Legends pay-per-view booking Kevin Nash and Ricky Morton.
The way it got started five months out from the event was that we had AWE founder Marvin Ward get “attacked” in the parking lot by unknown assailants.
Upon relating this tidbit on our Facebook page, the local hospital was flooded with phone calls from fans who wanted to check on Ward’s status.
As tired as the angle might be, what you say to yourself as a booker is if you get people calling a hospital or PD to check on the status of what you claimed just happened, you’re about to make some money.
