It’s clear that Laurence Verga has his eyes locked on State Sen. Robert Hurt.
“I challenge Senator Hurt to show leadership and join me in signing the pledge,” Verga said in a press statement announcing that he had signed on to the Club for Growth’s Repeal It Pledge, through which the conservative advocacy group is pledging to “sponsor and support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover passed in 2010, and replace it with real reforms that lower health-care costs without growing government.”
Verga, an Albemarle County commercial real-estate developer, is being looked at as perhaps the leading conservative challenger to the moderate Hurt, a Danville-area state senator.
The Verga press release took Hurt to task for a vote in the General Assembly in 2007 requiring sixth-grade girls to receive doses of the human papillomavirus vaccine as evidence that he has “voted for government to have a bigger role in our health-care decisions,” according to the release.
A Verga press release from last week raised issue with Hurt’s votes on a series of tax and fee issues, including the 2004 budget reform championed by Democratic Gov. Mark Warner and a bipartisan coalition in the General Assembly.
