VDOT to Reopen Proffit Road on Friday afternoon

road-work-headerRoute 649 (Proffit Road) in Albemarle County, which has been closed for bridge work since Oct. 19, will be reopened to traffic on Friday afternoon.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will complete repairs on the one-lane bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway on Friday morning, two weeks ahead of schedule. The bridge will be reopened to traffic at about 8 a.m.

To take advantage of the existing road closure, the VDOT crew will shift to perform a one-day debris removal job on the Route 649 bridge over the Rivanna River. The bridge, which is located 0.6 mile west of Route 20 (Stony Point Road), will close from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday for crane removal of a large stump that has washed against the bridge during recent rains.

On Friday, motorists should continue to use the official detour via Route 600 (Watts Passage Road). Note that traffic will not be able to use Route 643 (Polo Grounds Road) as a connector between Route 29 and Route 20.
