VDOT Staunton District Traffic Alert: June 20-24

road work transportationThe following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton District during the coming weeks.

The Staunton District is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies.

Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Watch for crews removing debris and trimming trees at various locations.  Cleaning around box culverts, drain pipes and ditches between mile markers 16 and 26.Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 2 to 4 and Exit 1 off-ramp, eastbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations throughJune 24, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 10 to 7 including Exit 7 off-ramp, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through June 24, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mile marker 36 to 31, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations through June 24, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 41 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures as needed for mowing and litter removal. Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 159 (Dunlap Creek Road) – Traffic lanes restricted to 8 feet 6 inches on temporary bridge during roadway alignment project for box culvert replacement over Crow Run.  Project will also use temporary traffic signals. Work zone is 0.45 mile west of Route 717 to 0.55 mile west of Route 17.  Commercial vehicles can use Route 18 as an alternate route. Estimated completion September.

Various roads – Contractor mowing crews with mobile operation.  Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Various roads – Flagger control traffic for paving operations at various locations. Mowing with mobile operations at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY                                                                                                                   

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris and cleaning paved ditches and drop inlets between mile marker 53 and 51. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 53 to 55, eastbound and westbound – Single-lane traffic through work zone. Westbound drivers use a median crossover to access the eastbound side of the interstate. After crossing the bridge, westbound drivers follow a second crossover to return to the I-64 westbound mainline. Eastbound traffic limited to the right lane. Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour.  Estimated project completion summer 2017.

Mile marker 57 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures as needed for mowing and litter removal.Monday to Saturday, daytime and nighttime work at various times.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Crews removing debris, cleaning paved ditches and trimming trees at various locations, Tuesday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cleaning box culverts and drain pipes between mile marker 177 to 179 and mowing stormwater ponds betweenmile marker 191 and 203 northbound. Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 174 to 205, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures as needed for mowing and litter removal.Monday to Saturday, daytime and nighttime work at various times.

(NEW) Mile marker 195 to 199, southbound – Right shoulder closures for fiber optic installation.  Monday to Friday. Estimated completion July 1.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Main Street, City of Lexington – Main Street closed between Diamond and Massie streets from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 21, for installation of pedestrian bridge components at VMI. Detour route will be marked with signs and flaggers will direct traffic.

Route 60 (Fredericksburg Road) Shoulder closures for utility installation beginning at the old Highland Belle School. The work will involve areas under the ramps on the east side of Route 60 and under I-64, and along east side of Route 623 (Fredericksburg Road) to 0.22 miles north of the I-64 ramp.

Various roads – Contractor mowing crews with mobile operation. Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Various roads – Pavement patching, mowing, pipe replacement, tree removal and ditching at various locations.Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 708 (Gilmore’s Mill Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement at Cedar Creek just east of Route 608 (Shafer Lane). Detour using Route 608 and Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway).  Estimated completion November 2016.

(NEW) Various roads – Centerline painting at various locations and times.

Various roads – Contractor mowing crews with mobile operation. Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Various roads – Pavement patching, mowing, pipe replacement, tree removal, grading and ditching at various locations. Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Various roads – Mowing with a mobile operation.  Pipe replacement and patching with flagger controlled traffic.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY  

INTERSTATE 64

(UPDATE) Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, shoulder work, trimming trees, and cleaning bridge slopes, paved ditches and inlets. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 1.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Lane closures as needed for mowing and litter removal. Sunday to Tuesday, daytime and nighttime work at various times.

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, trimming trees, cleaning paved ditches, drop inlets, box culverts and drain pipes at various locations.  Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 211.7 bridge over Route 662 (Stover School Road) – Shoulder closures for bridge painting, 7 days a week 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Estimated completion July 15.

(NEW) Mile marker 213 bridge over Route 11 (Lee Jackson Hwy) – Shoulder closures for bridge painting, 7 days a week 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Estimated completion June 30.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 229 to 234, southbound – Right shoulder closures Monday to Friday. Estimated completion July 1.

Mile marker 229 to 234, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures for fiber optic installationMonday to Saturday with brief overnight lane closures between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Estimated completion July 1.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 (Lee Jackson Hwy) – Lane closures between Route 701 (Howardsville Road) and Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) for bridge painting operation. 7 days a week 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Estimated completionJune 30.

Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Right shoulder closures for utility work from Route 613 (Spring Hill Road) to Route 728 (Stover Shop Road). Monday to Friday.

Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Right shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures for utility work from south of North Shilings Trail to Craigsville.  Monday to Friday.

(NEW) Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) – Bridge replacement over Whiskey Creek, just east of intersection with Route 722 (Vinegar Hill Road).  Occasional lane/shoulder closures as contractors relocate utilities and build a temporary bridge and approaches. Work zone speed limit is 25 miles an hour.  Traffic will detour onto the two-lane temporary bridge starting in early fall.

Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound lane closure/lane shifts from Staunton city limits to Route 1427 (Rowe Road) for utility work.

Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 1.

Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike) – Flagger controlled single lane closures as needed and intermittent shoulder closures from North Shillings Trail to Route 708 (Miss Phillips Road) for fiber optic installations.  Monday to Friday.

Route 340 (Rosser Avenue, Waynesboro) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 1.

Route 340 (Main Street, Waynesboro) – Road closed  between Constitution Park and East Avenue for replacement of South River bridge. Through traffic will use Broad Street (Route 250) as detour route. Local traffic has access to all businesses and residences throughout the project. Estimated completion December 2017.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for sign replacement and maintenance at various hours and locations.

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 608 (Cold Springs Road) – Pavement marking from Rockbridge County line to Route 666 (Lofton Road). Monday to Friday. Estimated completion June 30.

(NEW) Route 613 (Old Greenville Road) – Pavement marking from Route 871 (Cochrans Mill Road) to Route 1063 (Greenville Farm Lane). Monday to Friday. Estimated completion June 30.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue) – Right shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion July 1.

Route 641(Fishersville Road) – Intermittent lane and shoulder closures from Route 608 (Long Meadow Road) to Route 1360 (Westminster Drive) for water line upgrades. Monday to Friday.   Estimated completion September.

(NEW) Route 662 (Stover School Road)Flagger traffic control for I-81bridge painting, 7 days a week 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Estimated completion July 15.

Route 685 (Lehigh Road, Craigsville) – Road closed for bridge replacement over Little Calfpasture River between Route 684 and Route 42. Detour in place. Estimated completion December.

(NEW) Route 701 (Howardsville Road) – Lane closures for paving and pavement marking from Route 11(Lee-Jackson Highway) to Route 693 (Bethel Green Road). June 22 – July 1, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

(NEW) Various roads – Centerline painting at various locations and times.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for sign replacement and pavement-marking maintenance at various hours and locations.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris, maintenance under guardrails. Pothole repairs as needed. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 240 to 237 – southbound right shoulder closures for fiber optic installation, Monday to Saturday.  Brief overnight left lane closures at mile marker 240, northbound and southbound, between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Estimated completion July 1.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Replacement of North River bridge.  Watch for traffic shifts, right shoulder closures and flagger controlled intermittent lanes closures, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Work zone from Route 694 to one mile south of Mount Crawford.  Variable message boards and pavement markings direct motorists. Estimated completion July 2017.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger controlled lane closures between Route 613 (Whitmore Shop Road) and Route 847 (Rawley Springs Road) for fiber optic installtion. Monday through Friday.  Estimated completion July 22.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 340 (East Side Highway).  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October.

Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 253/659  (Port Republic Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Monday to Wednesday and Friday at various hours and locations.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 659 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 340.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated completion October.

Route 704 (Cecil Wampler Road) – Flagger controlled, intermittent right shoulder and lane closures for installation of water lines. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work zone between I-81 and Route 679 (Pleasant Valley Road).  Estimated completion June 30.

Route 754 (Rocky Bar Road) – Road closed 8 a.m. until June 24 just south of Route 649 (Berrytown Road) for bridge replacement over Twomile Run.  Follow posted detours.

(NEW) Route 826 (Criders Road) – Flagger controlled lane closure, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for surface treatment.  Work zone from 1.3 miles west of Route 865 (German River Road) to Route 820 (Bergton Road).  Estimated completion June 30.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Monday to Wednesday and Friday at various hours and locations.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for sign replacement and maintenance at various hours and locations.

Route 602 (East Point Road) – Alternating traffic control for sidewalk repair at tunnel into town of Shenandoah. Estimated completion June 24.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile Marker 264, northbound and southbound – Nighttime single lane closures Monday through Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., for bridge work over Route 211. Estimated completion July 29.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 264 to 300, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris and hand mowing around pipes and concrete ditches. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Contractor mowing in various locations Monday to Sunday. Pothole repairs as needed.

(NEW) Exit 283 off-ramp (Woodstock), southbound – Midnight to 4 a.m. closure Wednesday, June 22, for paving operations. Southbound exit 283 on-ramp will remain open. Signs and variable message boards will direct drivers on the detour route.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 286 to 282 including Exit 283 ramps (Woodstock), southbound – Overnight lane closures for milling, paving and pavement marking. Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following mornings. Estimated completion July 7.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 293 to 296, northbound – Left shoulder closure for drainage work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Estimated completion July 1.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 300-282, southbound and mile marker 294-300, northbound – Shoulder closures June 20–24 for installation of signs.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

(UPDATE) Route 211(West Lee Highway), northbound and southbound – Right and left shoulder closures for painting bridge over Smith Creek. 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. Estimated completion July 1.

Various roads – Brush cutting around signs.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 663 (Artz Road) Bridge replacement over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. The road will remain open during construction of the new bridge, with flagger controlled traffic 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday.  Estimated completion May 2018.

Queen Street (Route 1201, Town of Strasburg) – Road closed between South Massanutten Street and Holiday Street for bridge replacement over Town Run. Detour in place. Estimated completion November.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Mowing, pipe replacement, patching, grading and brush cutting.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

 

 

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

No lane closures reported.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 300-316, northbound and mile marker 324-300, southbound – Shoulder closures June 20-24 for installation of signs.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris, hand mowing around pipes and concrete ditches.  Pothole repairs as needed. Monday, Thursday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 309 to 312, northbound and southbound Right and left shoulder closed 24/7.  Speed limit reduced to 60 miles per hour throughout the work zone until completion of the exit 310 construction project.  Motorists should also be alert for trucks entering and exiting work zone. Estimated project completion May 2018.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 37 at I-81 Exit 310 (Kernstown Interchange Project), northbound and southbound Speed limit on Route 37 reduced to 35 miles per hour through the work zone. The newly built portion of Route 37 is now open.  Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersection with Route 642 (Tasker Road).

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Monday to Wednesday and Friday at various hours and locations.

(NEW) Various roads – Centerline painting at various locations and times.

SECONDARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange Project) – The speed limit on Route 642 is 45 miles per hour through the work zone. The newly built portion of Route 642 is now open.  Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersections with Route 37 and Route 847 (Hillandale).

(NEW) Route 689 (Adams Road) – Closed for bridge replacement over Brush Creek June 27 through July 29. The work zone is about 0.7 of a mile south of Route 600 (Brush Creek Road).  Follow posted detours.

(UPDATE) Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange Project) The newly built portion of Route 847 is now open. Motorists should be alert for traffic pattern changes at intersection with Route 642 (Tasker Road).

(NEW) Various roads – Watch daytime for signal maintenance work Monday to Wednesday and Friday at various hours and locations.

(NEW) Various roads – Centerline painting at various locations and times.

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 7 Business (East Main Street) – Lane closures for sidewalk work in two locations:  June 20, East Main Street between First Street and Church Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  June 21, East Main Street between Church Street and Buckmarsh Street (Route 340) will be closed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Both closures will have posted detours.


SECONDARY ROADS

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

(UPDATE) Mile marker 0 to 15, westbound and eastbound – Watch for crews removing debris and hand mowing around pipes and concrete ditches. Pothole repairs as needed.  Monday to Wednes and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 1, eastbound and mile marker 14.1, westbound –Shoulder closures June 20-24 for installation of signs.

(NEW) Mile marker 14 to 6, eastbound and westbound – Alternating right and left shoulder closure for bridge painting operations. 7a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion June 30.

 

INTERSTATE 81
No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through summer 2016 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road).  Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly.  Lane shift at 17th street and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection, placing all traffic on the newly constructed bridge. 18th street is open to traffic, with left turn restrictions until summer 2017.  Demolition of old South Fork bridge and construction of new bridge continues. Estimated project completion December 2017.

(UPDATE) 522 (Front Royal Park & Ride) – Watch for daytime lighting repairs Tuesday through Thursday.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Watch for daytime signal maintenance work on Friday at various hours and locations.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement over the Shenandoah River. Work zone from Route 643 (Howellsville Road) to Route 661 (Fairground Road).  Detours:  Drivers south of the bridge will turn right on Route 643 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then to Route 638 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn left on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) and left on Route 624 (Red Gate Road/Milldale Road) to reach the end of the detour. Drivers north of the bridge will follow Route 624 (Milldale Road/Red Gate Road) north and turn right on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn right on Route 638 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then Route 643, to reach the end of the detour.  Estimated project completion June 2018.

(UPDATE) Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control for bridge painting operations. 7 days a week, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Estimated completion June 30.

(UPDATE) Various roads – Watch for daytime signal maintenance work on Friday at various hours and locations.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

Various roads – Mowing and patching.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
