The Route 690 (Columbia Road) bridge over the James River at Columbia in Fluvanna County is closed after a VDOT inspection.

Damage to the bridge, in the form of a large pothole in the pavement and erosion on the shoulder at the south end of the bridge in Cumberland County, was discovered Wednesday afternoon.

The inspection determined that traffic should not use the bridge until it is repaired.

Repairs to the pavement and shoulder will begin early Thursday morning, and the road should reopen to traffic sometime on Thursday.

Until the bridge reopens, motorists should use the James River bridges on U.S. 15 (James Madison Highway) at Bremo Bluff or Route 45 (Cartersville Road) at Cartersville as alternate river crossings.
