The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

* (NEW) Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) – Prep work for bridge replacement over War Branch, June 3-9. Road closure to thru traffic begins June 10. Traffic will detour via Route 798 (Arkton Road) to Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 608 (Mauzy Athlone Road). Work zone is 0.55 miles north of the intersection of Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) and Route 608 (Mauzy Athlone Road) and 1.85 miles south of the intersection of Route 620 and Route 798 (Arkton Road). Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Motorists should use extreme caution and obey posted speed limit. Estimated completion is fall 2013.

Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, is permanently closed. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.
