VDOT: Road work on the schedule in Albemarle, Greene, Nelson, for week of May 19-23

VDOT has released an updated schedule of road construction and maintenance for Albemarle County, Greene County and Nelson County for the week of May 19-23.

Albemarle County 


(NEW) Interstate 64 – Tree trimming. Expect right shoulder closures between mile markers 118 and 119. Personnel and equipment will be working close to the travel lanes. Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) – Pedestrian bridge construction. Expect intermittent 20-minute traffic stoppages northbound and southbound from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Seminole Court and Zan Road, Tuesday through Thursday nights for placement of beams on the pedestrian bridge over U.S. 29. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during this overnight work.

Roadway improvement — Expect alternating lane closures nightly, Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday in the following areas:

  • U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail), between Route 1694 (Branchlands Boulevard) and the Charlottesville city line in the northbound and southbound lanes.
  • U.S. 250 Bypass, between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street) and the Charlottesville city line in the eastbound and westbound lanes.
  • Route 743 (Hydraulic Road), between U.S. 250 Bypass and U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) in the northbound and southbound lanes.

(UPDATE) Roadway sweeping – Expect mobile, alternating lane closures, 3:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the following areas:

  • Route 631 (Rio Road West), between U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 743 (Earlysville Road/Hydraulic Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Tuesday.
  • Route 649 (Airport Road), between U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 606 (Dickerson Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday.
  • Route 654 (Barracks Road), between the Charlottesville city line and Route 656 (Georgetown Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Friday.

(NEW) Traffic engineering – Expect shoulder closures in the following areas, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except where noted.

  • Interstate 64 westbound, mile marker 108 to 107, Monday through Friday.
  • Route 240 (Three Notch’D Road), eastbound right shoulder closed at Route 680 (Brown’s Gap Turnpike), Monday through Friday.

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following area:

  • Route 751 (Brownsville Road), both shoulders closed between Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) and U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

(UPDATE) Paving – Expect alternating lane closures, except when otherwise noted, from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the following area:

  • Route 677 (Old Ballard Road), between U.S. 250 (Ivy Road) and Route 676 (Owensville Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday.

(NEW) Route 618 (Jefferson Mill Road) – Bridge superstructure repairs. All lanes and shoulders closed to through traffic between Route 622 (Albevanna Springs Road) and Route 712 (Blenheim Road), 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Route 601 (Old Ivy Road) – Bridge superstructure repairs. Bridge will be restricted to eastbound traffic during construction. Westbound traffic should follow signed detour around the work. Drivers should go slow and use caution near the work zone. Intermittent night closures will also be in place during construction from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. For detailed detour information, visit Route 601 bridge over U.S. 29/250. Expected completion in the fall of 2026.

Greene County


(NEW) Traffic engineering – Expect right shoulder closures Monday through Friday in the following area:

  • U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail), between Summit Drive and Heatherton Road, northbound right shoulder closed, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Construction – Expect alternating lane closures in the following area:

  • U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail), between Summit Drive and Heatherton Road, northbound right shoulder closed, Monday through Friday, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect alternating lane closures in the following areas:

  • Route 609 (Fredericksburg Road), between Route 619 (Dundee Road) and Route 672 (Miller Mountain Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Route 610 (Toms Road), between Route 657 (Albano Road) and Route 618 (Heights Hill Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Route 230 (Madison Road), between Route 1004 (Childs Road) and Route 1005 (Commonwealth Drive) in the eastbound and westbound lanes daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nelson County


Route 653 (Wilson Road) – Bridge Replacement. The bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad is closed. Estimated reopening, November 2025.
