The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks.
The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

Route 60 (East Nelson Street, Lexington) – Bridge over Varner Lane is closed. East Nelson Street traffic from Washington Street to Randolph Street will be rerouted onto Washington Street for the duration of the bridge reconstruction. Watch for detour signs. Estimated completion is December 2013.

Route 710 (Sterrett Road) – Daytime lane closures for bridge work as part of the I-81 Truck Climbing Lane project. Route 710 traffic will be reduced to one northbound lane Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, while crews work on the I-81 bridge deck. (NEW) Mile marker 240 to 247 – “Slow roll” lane closures, Sunday, October 27, between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. for installation of overhead utility lines crossing I-81. The northbound slow roll lane closure will begin at exit 240 (Mount Crawford/Bridgewater) and finish at exit 247 (Route 33). The southbound slow roll will start at exit 247 and finish at exit 240. During the operation flagging crews will control interstate access at the on-ramps for exits 243 and 245. The operation will utilize Virginia State Police and variable message boards. All work is weather permitting, and slow-roll times are subject to change.

The road will be closed from about 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., just east of the entrance to the Wal-Mart distribution center near Interstate 81. Traffic will be detoured as follows: Westbound drivers will take Route 276 (Cross Keys Road) north and Route 253 (Port Republic Road) west to Interstate 81. Eastbound drivers will follow I-81 north to exit 245, Route 253 east and Route 276 south to Route 682.
Route 726 (Stone Spring Road and Peach Grove Avenue) – New road construction to extend Southeast Connector. Possible shoulder closures controlled by signs, from 0.51 mile east of Harrisonburg city limits to 0.15 mile west of city limits. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686.
