VDOT: New Route 704 bridge in Rockingham County now open

Chris Graham

vdot bridgeThe Virginia Department of Transportation has opened the new Cooks Creek bridge on Route 704 (Oakwood Drive) in Rockingham County near the town of Bridgewater. Traffic was shifted onto the new span this week, three months ahead of schedule.

Contractor Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville built the two-lane bridge and widened the roadway on both sides. The bridge replaces a single-lane structure that dated back to 1930 and was too narrow to accommodate modern traffic loads. The $1.3 million dollar project included a temporary bridge that routed drivers around the work zone.

Crews will be painting lines on the new bridge and approaches on Monday, July 21, 2014. Flaggers will control traffic during this operation and at various other times as contractors remove the temporary bridge and roadway. All work is weather permitting.

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511 and at 511Virginia.org. For other assistance call the VDOT Customer Service Center, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Citizens can dial 1-800-FOR- ROAD (1-800-367-7623) from anywhere in the state to report road hazards, ask transportation questions, or get information related to Virginia’s roads.

The Staunton District Twitter feed is @VaDOTStaunton. VDOT can be followed on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and YouTube. RSS feeds are also available for statewide information. The VDOT Web page is located at www.VirginiaDOT.org.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
