vcu basketballVCU basketball alum Johnny Williams (Richmond, Va.) will continue his basketball career in Holland. The 6-foot-1 point guard has signed his first professional contract with Dutch club Aris Leeuwarden, the team announced Friday.

Known for his passing ability and his acrobatic drives to the rim, Williams led the Atlantic 10 Conference in assists per game (5.7) in 2017-18. The Richmond native also averaged 9.8 points per game, third-best on the Rams.

Williams was a critical cog for VCU for four seasons, including the last two as a starter. In 133 games in the Black and Gold, Williams scored nearly 800 points, while dishing out 389 assists, which ranks in the top 15 on VCU’s career list. His 182 assists in 2017-18 rank ninth in school single-season history.

In four seasons, Williams helped VCU to three NCAA Tournament appearances, as well as the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Championship.

Williams will be the third former VCU Basketball start to suit up for Aris Leeuwarden, following Brandon Rozzell and Darius Theus. Leeuwarden finished 10-22 in the Dutch Basketball League in 2017-18.
